Mining industry uses scandium oxide as the primary form of scanningdium refining. While scandium-rich minerals such as thorium magnesite (Sc,Y)2(Si2O7), and Kolbeckite SPO4*2H2O may be rare, it is found in small quantities in many other minerals. Application in electronic materials
The oxidizing agent for the color TV picture tube cathode gun is pure SC2O3. It can also be used with great effect as pure SC2O3. An oxide layer 1mm thick of Ba, Sr and Ca is spray on the top of the color tube cathode. A thin layer of SC2O3 is then dispersed onto it. Because of the Mg, Sr, and Ba reactions in the oxide layer cathode, they promote the reduction. The released electrons can also be more active and emit large current electrons. Thus, the cathode with SC2O3 coated cathode can have a 4X increase in current density. It will make TV pictures clearer. Also, it has a 3X longer life span. For each 21 inch imaging cathode, the SC2O3 content is 0.01mg.
