What is 316 Stainless Steel
What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
It is common to add alloys to steel to increase the desired properties. This stainless steel grade is marine also known as Type 316, is resistant to certain types of corrosive environments.
There are many types made of stainless steel. Most commonly used are L F, H, and H variations. Each one is distinct, and each one is designed for the same purpose. L means 316L steel has the lowest carbon content, which is below 316.
316 and 316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although they're not as similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, Type 316 and 316L both offer better resistance to corrosion and are more robust at high temperatures. They are also not able to be hardened through heat treatment, and they can be easily stretched and shaped.
Differentialities between 316L and 316 Stainless Steel
The stainless steel of 316L is lower in carbon than 316. But despite having a low carbon levels, 316L is very similar to 316 in almost every way. Cost is the same, as are both durable and resistant against corrosion, making them a good choice for high-stress situations.
However, for projects that require a lot of welding, 316L is the better option since 316 is more prone to welding corrosion rather than those using 316L (corrosion on the inside of the welding). But, the 316 is able to be annealed, allowing it to resist welding attenuation. Also, 316L is a suitable stainless steel choice for high temperatures and high corrosion, which is why it is extremely popular in marine and construction.
None of 316 nor 316L is the most affordable option. The 304 is similar to the 304L but the cost is less. It isn't as durable as the 317 and 317L which have a higher molybdenum contents and better total corrosion resistance.
